Physiocentric is the exciting evolution of The Joy Walter Clinic, a practice established in 2001, and one which has been amongst the leading providers of high quality physiotherapy in the London and Surrey areas ever since.
The seeds of the current business were sown by the eponymous Joy Walter, a New Zealand trained physiotherapist who moved to the UK in 1992, and set up her own practice 3 years later. Joy initially started the clinic from her own home in Wimbledon Village, and established a satellite clinic in the current Hinchley Wood location shortly afterwards.
Joy’s skills were such that her popularity as a physiotherapist grew rapidly, and she soon acquired a patient base so expansive that she needed to develop the clinic further and find new premises. The current building in Ridgway Mews, Wimbledon Village, was identified as the perfect location and Joy was instrumental in designing the interior of what was an empty shell. The refit provided 5 treatment rooms and a large gym, as well as a spacious reception area and entrance hall.
Joy’s next challenge was to establish an excellent team to work with her.
The new team started with Geoff van Klaveren joining Joy as a partner for the opening of the clinic in April 2001. Combining his own successful private practice with Joy’s, the partnership was further strengthened and completed with Chris Smith joining 3 months later, after 10 years in professional football with Fulham FC. This new partnership brought together a vast range of clinical skills and experience, and meant they were able to build a substantial network of medical contacts, providing patients with access to the best medical care available.
Under the new partnership, the clinic began to thrive and with multiple referral sources and recommendations from existing patients, there was a significant demand to expand the clinical team further. To meet these demands the partners brought in specialist physiotherapists from both the NHS and elite sport to ensure the clinic was able to offer a range of clinical skills to cater for all conditions.
The clinic has continued to expand into its second decade; it now boasts more than a dozen physiotherapists, a Pilates studio, sports massage, biomechanics and strength and conditioning expertise, and even a private GP practice and Psychotherapist. During this time the clinic has always maintained a personal touch with a focus on the patient as an individual, and to date has cared for more than 24,000 patients.
During the summer of 2013, the clinic underwent an exciting rebrand that revitalised the already hugely successful brand. Our rebrand has ensured our patients that our clinic has stayed relevant to their needs. The new name was carefully chosen to reflect the core philosophy of the healthcare we offer, and the clinic will continue to deliver the highest standards of care available.
